This school year, Northside Christian Academy welcomed new coach, Dorothy Kelley, to our athletic department. Dorothy was born and raised in Greenville, SC and moved to the Columbia area in 2017. She was on her Varsity Cheer Squad at Greenville High for 6 years and was an important piece to their AAA Cheerleading State Championship in 2007. She is a graduate of Clemson University and also has her graduate degree from Michigan State University in Strategic Leadership.
The NCA Cheerleading Program and Coach Kelley were excited to welcome a lot of new girls to the team this year bringing the squad to 17 girls for the 2020 season. The squad is built of a diverse group of girls with 5 returning cheerleaders and 12 new cheerleaders, ranging from 6th grade to 12th grade.
The focus of 2020-2021 is bringing more athletic skills into the cheerleading program to add some tumbling and stunting routines into some engaging and fun activities. Halftime shows, as well as sideline performances for our football and basketball games, are exciting for our cheerleaders, fans, and football players. They are also a crucial step in getting the team ready to compete in SCISA cheerleading competitions in future seasons. As our lady crusaders have seen the fun activities and new skills being learned, interest has skyrocketed with record numbers in the program.
“The girls are excited about cheer becoming a more competitive sport, and I’ve seen a lot of individual and team growth in a short amount of time,” stated Coach Kelley. Hallie Horton is the middle school captain and Grace Dennis is the high school captain for the Crusaders.
Kelley adds, “This group of girls bring a lot of energy and spirit to the program, and they are enjoying supporting our NCA football team this fall and look forward to our NCA basketball teams starting soon!”
